 PLAY IT SAFE ON SITE

When you visit a project site, there are a number of precautions you should take. Shawn Barry, general superintendent/corporate safety officer makes the following recommendations:

• Wear the correct attire. High heels and $400 Italian loafers don’t mix very well with mud and gravel. Steel toed boots are best for anyone who will make regular site visits. Also do not wear dresses, skirts or shorts, and try to avoid loose clothing because it can get snagged on machinery.

• Remember to bring hearing and site protection with you. Noise from construction equipment can damage your hearing over time, while debris, dust and arc welding flashes can damage your eyesight.

• When you arrive, make sure you check in with the on-site supervisor. You may need to sign a waiver before you can enter the site. The supervisor also will alert you to dangerous areas you should avoid. You should inform the supervisor of any health conditions you may have including diabetes, asthma, heart condition and allergies. Also be sure to let the supervisor know when you’re leaving.

• While on the site tour be aware of the exits and plan a spot to meet outside for a head count in case of an emergency.
