TIPS FOR DEVELOPING A DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN | Disasters happen without warning, so it’s important to have a plan in place that can take effect immediately. Andie Groff, office manager for Krusinski Construction Company, offers the following tips to help your company prepare for a catastrophe.
Designate a safety team of five or six people who can be points of contact during a disaster action plan. For larger buildings with several floors, a safety team with members from every floor should be considered.
Safety team members should know your company/building’s evacuation plan and attend a class on CPR and AED (defibrillators).
Coordinate fire drills and tornado drills for building occupants at least once every six months. Your local fire department will help you.
Store supplies at a remote location, which should include a contact list of employees, occupants of the building (if you have tenants on other floors) and business clients/vendors, as well as office supplies, letterhead, envelopes, overnight shipping supplies and other operating necessities.
Always have backup tapes of your computer systems. Use a rotation process and remove the tapes daily. Store them at an off-site location. This will help get your company back online within a few hours of a disaster.
Copies of your software with licensing information should be created and stored in a fireproof safe or lockbox off-site. These items will help your company keep costs down during the rebuilding process and will help get your computer systems back online faster.
